#FocusThursday - Helmut Newton / by Ryan Henwood-White

Helmut Newton (born Helmut Neustädter; 31 October 1920 – 23 January 2004) was a German-Australian photographer. He was a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmut_Newton

Helmut Newton was the "King of Kink". Newton has been a huge source of inspiration for me since my initial desire to photograph nudes and certainly contributed to my realisation that I could even do it in the first place. There is a beautiful eroticism to his photography that I resonate with as a sexual being. Women are clearly comfortable around him, and there is an open mindedness and acceptance of sexual deviance which is clearly expressed through his work. In the same way, I learnt from Newton that I too could communicate my perspective of open-mindedness surrounding nudity and sexuality, and help to remove the taboo surrounding these things through the medium of photography. I love conscious kink. Consent is everything, and these photographs clearly communicate sexual desire and alternative sexual practices in a consensual way.
