Joni Sternbach is another photographer that I have discovered through the podcast On Taking Pictures. Joni uses a large format, wet plate collodion process. It's time consuming and out-dated, but produces amazing results. The wet plate process clearly defines her work and her photographs reflect the time it takes to make such images. These aren't snapshots, they're patient endeavors with forethought and care. I find the subject matter of surfers intriguing. A unique approach to a subset of people that I don't ever see as someone who finds sand and saltwater unappealing. I enjoy the quiet contemplation on the faces of her subjects. To me, they seem melancholic, but at peace. She's definitely one of a kind.
